You may have received lesser dividend than you expected owing to TDS i.e. tax deducted at source, which is deducted before the dividend is credited to your bank account. Now, the applicable TDS rate might differ for various scenarios. 

- TDS rate of 10% is applicable for dividends on equity shares and equity mutual funds, if the dividend amount exceed Rs.5000

- If the company or appointed RTA does not have your PAN details, TDS will be deducted at 20% rate

- TDS rate of 20%, along with surcharge and cess is applicable for NRIs

- You might be subjected to a lesser(or nil) dividend rate if you have filled form 15G or 15H with the company invested in

 The TDS paid on dividends would be a part of the tax paid for the financial year.
