Pre-market session – The NSE began the pre-market session to reduce the volatility of the securities during open market on a daily basis. This session takes place on the NSE between 9 am and 9:15 am.

During the first 8 minutes of pre-market session, i.e., between 9 am and 9:08 am, orders are gathered, altered, or cancelled. You are allowed to place limit and market orders. This order collection window closes any time between 9:07 am and 9:08 am.

After the closure of this window till 9:15 am, new orders in the pre-market session are not allowed to be placed. On the other hand, the orders placed during the first leg of the window are matched and the trades are confirmed. You are only allowed to place orders during order collection period on the equity segment. 

Post-market session – Like pre-market sessions, post-market sessions are only permitted for the equity segment. This session is open between 3:40 pm and 4 pm. 

In the post-market session, the public can buy or sell orders in equity at the market price. However, note that if you place a market order it will be placed on the exchange at the closing price. Typically, the post-market session is not quite active. You can observe the stock movement from 3:40 pm to 4 pm by opening the watchlist.
